Call open for ECREA Doctoral Summer School 2015

The ECREA European Media and Communication Doctoral Summer School 2015 brings together members of the European research community to this summer school in order to debate contemporary issues in media, communication and cultural studies. The main emphasis of this summer school is on providing structural and individuated PhD-support for young European scholars, through a variety of working forms, including feedback seminars, workshops, and lectures.

The summer school aims to provide a supportive international setting where doctoral students can present their ongoing work, receive feedback on their PhD-projects from international experts and meet students and academics from other countries, establishing valuable contacts for the future.

At the end of the Summer School, the second Alumni Conference will be organised, where also 2015 participants can present a paper, if they wish to do so. All Summer School participants are expected to attend this conference.

THE TOPIC

The topic of this year’s summer school is “Politics, Civil Society and Participation“. However, the summer school is open to the full variety of academic work from the field of communication and media studies, not limited to the overall topic of the summer school. The overall theme for the programme provides just one of the many topical focal points of the summer school and will not be used as a main criterion for participant selection. Also the lectures will not be exclusively focused on the theme.

HOW TO APPLY

There are two options to attend the Summer School:

For students whose universities are a member of the organizing consortium (the list is available here: http://ecreasummerschool.org/institutional-coordinators.html) the summer school will provide:
– free accommodation for the whole duration of the summer school, including breakfast
– free Welcome and Farewell Dinner
– free WiFi at the summer school venue
– free summer school materials (including 2 books)
– free coffee in the breaks

Payment of a registration fee of 560 Euros is required.

For students whose universities are not a member of the organizing consortium, the summer school will provide:
– free accommodation for the whole duration of the summer school, including breakfast
– free Welcome and Farewell Dinner
– free WiFi at the summer school venue
– free summer school materials (including 2 books)
– free coffee in the breaks

Payment of a registration fee of 660 Euros is required.

The total number of students will be limited to 44, half of them from consortium members.

CREDITS

The summer school gives full recognition to the activities of participating students who are awarded 10 ECTS credits for their participation in the full programme (including the supple-mentary activities). Six of the best student presentations and all abstracts of student projects will be published in the Summer School Book.

TRAVEL GRANTS

There will be a limited number of individual travel grants provided to students who are unable to otherwise participate in the Summer School. There is a separate application and selection procedure in order to apply for these grants. Only accepted participants are eligible to apply for a travel grant. The deadline for grant application is May 25.

DEADLINE

The deadline for applications for the summer school is 15 March 2015.

Applicants from consortium universities and affiliated partners of the summer school must coordinate their application with their institutional coordinators.

All applicants will be informed about the selection of participants in early April.

A wide range of student papers is sought for, and it is not necessary to fit into the yearly theme of the doctoral summer school. The working language of the summer school will be English; therefore, a sufficient understanding and ability to express oneself in this language is expected.
